This is the photo gallery for our boat. Last count there were about 600 photos. Some are photos of people on the boat. These are mostly of interest to family and friends. Some are photos of boat work. These may be of interest to others who own a Compac 23 or another boat. Some are photos of places visited by sail.
There have been a few major iterations of this photo gallery. At first it was just a jumble of photos. This was fine until there were well over a hundred photos and it was way too much for one web page. The first major change was to break the photos up into multiple pages. This occurred in 2002. Some time later narratives were added to the pages. The second major change was to create a two level heirarchy of pages, by season and then into a few groups of photos. That occurred in 2003.
Updating these web pages has generally been an off season activity. By January 2004 the 2003 photos were up to date which include a 12~day sail from Cape Cod to Nantucket, Marthas Vineyard, Block Island and back. A lot of seascape and landscape photos were taken then.
Updating the web pages was a manual process and hand editing the HTML files was getting too cumbersome. Many of the pages had too many photos and loaded very slowly so change was needed. Browsers now supported new HTML features and it was also time to abandon the heavy use of tables in favor of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). With winter of 2005 approaching and no updates to the web pages for the 2004 and 2005 season it was time to write some PHP code to make a massive conversion possible plus make the job of entering new stuff easier plus make stuff easier to find.
